The New Hollywood
Just as the studio system gave way to New Hollywood in the 1970s, streaming is transforming cinema today. Netflix, Disney+, Apple TV+, and others are spending billions on original content.
The Good
Streaming has given filmmakers creative freedom. Martin Scorsese made "The Irishman" with Netflix. Jane Campion won Best Director for "The Power of the Dog" on Apple TV+. Auteurs who struggled to fund mid-budget dramas now have platforms.
The Bad
Theatrical exhibition is threatened. Major directors worry about the "movie" experience disappearing. Films that deserve big screens sometimes premiere on laptops.
The Future
Hybrid releases may become the norm. Streaming platforms are now producing more ambitious theatrical releases while maintaining their digital presence.
